‘WOMEN DON’T OWE YOU PRETTY’: ARE YOU READY TO FEEL EMPOWERED?

You should really think about dumping him…

Florence Given’s debut has stormed into our lives with the beautiful, albeit brutal wisdom of that of a stranger in a nightclub toilet. The 21 year old artist/ influencer released her first book, ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ in June of this year, and a limited gold-paged edition has been re-released just in time for Christmas. ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ delves into the human condition, exploring themes of self-love and self-loathing; consent; sexuality; privilege; oppression and the patriarchy. Its premise? Prettiness is not the price you pay to exist as a woman.

Chapter one; Feminism is going to ruin your life (in the best way possible). The title of this chapter sets the tone for the rest of the book. The growth in becoming your authentic self is difficult Given explains. Most growth comes as a result of self-reflection and by facing up to one's own prejudices. We all have internalised misogyny for example. No-one likes to admit their flaws, so a book that directly addresses your own internalised prejudice feels intimidating. However, Given is neither condescending nor virtuous. She guides the reader through with a tone that is as simplistic as it is authoritative.

If I am honest, I felt twinges of discomfort reading this book. It made me look at the ways I have been treated in the past and the ways in which I have behaved. Realising your own flaws is uncomfortable to say the least, but as Given explains it is  vital for growth. Given has the ability to teach you to channel that discomfort into something more positive. However this book is only the start. Personal growth Is a lifelong project and all Given does is provide the building blocks to start it. ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ is an access point into feminism.

Prior to her Debut, Given’s influence grew across Instagram, showcasing her talent as an illustrator. These illustrations are included in her book giving it originality and vibrancy. Her prints are bright and colourful, her slogans punchy. Women now walk down the high street, their head high and their tote bag adorned with the slogan ‘off for a shag’. She even landed the Cosmopolitan influencer of the year award in 2019. Her Instagram provides a safe place for women and marginalised groups, dealing with subjects ranging from white privilege to female pleasure.

Florence Given has undoubtedly put her own (leopard print) stamp on feminist conversation. She is sassy, intelligent and couldn't give a damn what others think of her. In my books, that's a pretty cool role model. ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ is a fantastic tool for self progression and should be utilised by everyone. Yes, even men. The book taps right into your mind and will teach you today is a wonderful day to dump them; you are the love of your own life; how to set boundaries and to never, ever fake an orgasm.
